South America 3: Samba & Tango trams
October / November 2028

There is a lot happening in Brazil! Since our last visit, many new sections of existing lines and even entirely new tram networks have been built. In addition, we still need to visit some of the iconic preserved operations in Argentina.

For now, this page serves to gather ideas and gauge potential interest in the tour.

So far, the following activities are on the agenda:

• Rio de Janeiro: *Bonde* (Santa Teresa) extension
• Rio de Janeiro: New and old VLT Carioca routes
• Salvador de Bahia: New operation
• Santos: New city-center line
• Itatinga: Canal-side operation
• Recife, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, and São Paulo: Subway and Metro systems
• Campinas: Museum operation
• Buenos Aires: New cars at the tram museum, night runs
• Rosario: Car 277
• Valle Hermoso: Garden tram

Of course, the rest of South America also offers well-known classics and new developments. However, following the experience of the 2026 tram tour across the continent - which involved many expensive flights to get from one tram system to the next - I want to make this trip more cost-effective. We will therefore focus exclusively on Brazil and Argentina. If enough potential destinations emerge for 2029 and beyond, we can consider visiting other South American countries then.

If you are interested in joining, I would appreciate hearing from you so I can base my cost calculations on a realistic group size. And regardless of whether you join the trip or not, I would also welcome suggestions for any tram systems we absolutely shouldn't miss! Just send me an email, please.
