SARDINIA: Trams on the Island
April 2027
Two tram lines currently operate on the Sardinian island, in Cagliari and Sassari, which we will visit on this affordable tram tour.
After the old tram network in Cagliari was closed in 1973, a new light rail system was opened only in 2008, which has seen gradual expansions in recent years. The current, final expansion phase (extension from Piazza Repubblica to Piazza Matteotti) was scheduled to begin in 2012, but work actually only began in 2021 and has still not been completed to date (July 2025).
As part of the project, the existing Repubblica–Caracalla line was also upgraded. A second track was laid throughout, and the previously single-track Centro Commerciale station was rebuilt accordingly. An additional siding was built on the Caracalle–Redentore section, which will remain single-track for the time being, and the signaling and safety technology throughout the entire section was renewed.
The fleet currently consists of nine Škoda 06T articulated trams and three slightly longer CAF Urbos 100 articulated multiple units.
The Sassari light rail line runs from the suburb of Santa Maria di Pisa via Sassari station to the city center at the Emiciclo Garibaldi (4.3 km). The line is operated by ARST and operates every 15 to 27 minutes on weekdays. The line uses AnsaldoBreda vehicles (four 27.5 m long, five-car bidirectional Sirio trams). Despite major plans to expand existing services, no further line extensions have yet been initiated.
The program is still under development (as of July 2025). If you are interested in regular updates on this trip or suggestions for the itinerary, please send me an email!
